Ashutosh Gowariker’s production house Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt Ltd (AGPPL) completed 20 years on December 9 and on this momentous occasion, the producer-director went down memory lane and spoke about his memorable films and a lot more during an exclusive interaction with Bollywood HungamaAt one point in this interview, he opened up about the issues faced by his acclaimed 2008 film jodhaa akbarstarring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

jodhaa akbar was accused of being inaccurate leading to protests and a ban in certain states. Ashutosh Gowariker, however, said that the royal family of Jaipur had no objection. He said, “I had the support of the Jaipur gharana. The royalty had given me all the support and had said that Jodhaa was their ancestor. The confusion happened over Jodhbhai and Jodhaa. Jodhbhai came much later and was from the Jodhpur gharana. Based on this confusion, there was a lot of furore. Questions were asked, ‘Why is Jodhaa Akbar not correct historically?’.”
The opening slate of jodhaa akbar has a ‘Special Thanks’ mention to HH Maharaj Bhawani Singhji of Jaipur and HH Maharani Padmini Deviji of Jaipur. It was followed by a lengthy disclaimer that though some historians believe that the name of Akbar’s wife was Jodha, many have an alternate version.
Talking about the controversy, Ashutosh Gowariker continued, “Ultimately, it got sorted. A court case was filed and I won that case. This is because I submitted all the evidence, present in history books, to prove that Akbar’s wife indeed was a woman named Jodhaa.”
He added, “Nevertheless, it caused a dent as the film didn’t release in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It did release in those states much later. Also, once the film is on satellite, how can you ban it? The film is going to enter every household!”
When asked about what he was doing on the day of release, Ashutosh revealed, “We already knew that it’s going to be released in Rajasthan. We decided to rather focus on states where the film managed to make it to cinemas.”
Interestingly, the day jodhaa akbar was released, February 15, was also Ashutosh Gowariker’s birthday.
