The Belgian police arrested the fugitive Mehul Choksi, who scams about 15 thousand crore rupees in India. The arrest took place at the request of India’s investigating agency CBI. After bringing terrorist Tahawwur Rana to India, people have hoped that more enemies of India can be brought to India by pulling terrorists and fugitive scamsters.
The Government of India has made a lot of efforts for extradition of people involved in terrorism and other serious crimes. The government had stated in Parliament in December last year that they have made 178 such requests from different countries, in which 23 people have been extradited.
Mama-nephew scam of 13 thousand crores
Mehul Choksi is a diamond businessman who owns a Gitanjali group with more than 4 thousand stores. Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi had cheated Rs 13 thousand 400 crore by receiving Bhagat from the officials of Punjab National Bank. On the notice of a Mumbai court, Choksi had said that he has blood cancer, so he cannot come to India due to running radiation therapy.
Since then, India’s investigative agencies were trying to arrest him abroad. The ED focused on his wealth abroad and asked countries like Thailand, UAE, Japan and America to sell its property located in those countries and transfer India, so that the victims’ money can be returned.

Mehul Choksi got citizenship of Antigua in the year 2017, after which he fled from India after the scam in January 2018. After this, investigation into the PNB scam of Rs 13 thousand 400 crore started against him. In December 2018, Interpol issued a red corner notice against Choksi.
Choksi went missing from Antigua
Antigua stated in 2021 that Choksi would not be extradited before 2027 but Choksi went missing from Antigua in May 2021 and found in Dominica. He accused Indian agents of kidnapping and harassment. In July 2021, the Dominica court allowed Choksi to return to Antigua. In March 2023, Mehul Choksi’s name was removed from Entpol’s red corner notice but the efforts of India’s investigative agencies continued.
India’s investigative agencies came to know that Mehul Choksi has been living in Belgium with his wife in the name of treatment for the last few days. His wife is a citizen of Belgium. After this, the investigating agencies demanded the arrest of Choksi from Belgian authorities.
Hawala can be given for poor health
After being satisfied with the ED and CBI papers, Belgian police arrested Mehul Choksi and cited a warrant issued against him by the Mumbai court while arresting him. Now he can demand bail and immediate release by citing poor health. Indian agencies will oppose bail and demand extradition.
Indian officials are preparing to go to Belgium for the next hearing of Choksi’s case. They are formulating a legal strategy to ensure that Choksi remains in custody and the process of extradition can begin soon.
ED seized Choksi’s house in Malabar Hill
