Shubman Gill, vice -captain of the Indian team for the ODI series against England, has expressed happiness over the success of Abhishek Sharma in T20 International matches. At the same time, he has also made it clear that there is no ‘toxic competition’ between young openers (Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma) in the white ball.
Gill clarified this by answering questions about his place in the T20 International team ahead of India’s ODI series against England. Gill will have to face pressure from Yashasvi Jaiswal in ODIs, as this left -handed batsman has been selected as a reserve opener for the ODI series and the Champions Trophy.
Gill was talking to the media in Nagpur on Tuesday, where the first match of the ODI series will be played on Thursday (6 February). Shubman Gill has returned to the team India after being out of the T20 series against England. After the average performance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the young opener who played in the Ranji Trophy for Punjab scored a century in the second innings against Karnataka in Bengaluru.
Is Shubman Gill in T20 sideline?
Gill has not participated in T20 International cricket since the series in Sri Lanka in July 2024. The captain of Gujarat Titans was not even part of the T20 World Cup team last year, but he went with the team as a reserve player. In the absence of Gill, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have left their mark in the top order in T20 cricket.

Samson scored three centuries in five matches in 2024, while Abhishek showed his talent by scoring a century in 34 balls in T20I against England in Mumbai on Sunday (2 February).

Gill said in a press conference on Tuesday- Abhishek is my childhood friend, Jaiswal is also my friend, I do not think there is a toxic competition among us.
