India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reached Bangladesh on Monday on a one-day visit. Here he met the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, and raised the issue of atrocities on Hindus. After this meeting, he addressed the media at Dhaka State Guest House Jamuna. Foreign Secretary Misri said that New Delhi wants to enhance engagement with the interim government of Bangladesh and make joint and concerted efforts to boost relations between the two neighbours.
Vikram Misri said about increasing the rapprochement between Bangladesh and India that there is no doubt about it. He said that we consider it beneficial for both the countries. Discussing issues of mutual interest, Misri said, ‘We want to continue from where we left off.’ During the 40-minute meeting between Muhammad Yunus and Vikram Misri, issues of minorities, misinformation, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India, regional cooperation and the July-August mass uprising were discussed.

India’s Foreign Secretary said, ‘We have to work with the present government. This is an important relationship between the two countries. Professor Yunus described the relations between Bangladesh and India as ‘very solid’ and ‘close’. He asked India to help remove the ‘clouds’ that have cast a shadow over relations between the two neighbors in recent times. He raised the issue of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5, 2024. Muhammad Yunus termed Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule as a ‘cruel and corrupt dictatorship’.

Muhammad Yunus said, ‘Our people are worried because she (Sheikh Hasina) is giving many statements from there (India). This creates tension between the two countries. Vikram Misri said that during the mass uprising of July-August, he monitored the events happening in Bangladesh almost every hour. Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, detailed how students, workers and people from other sections came together and organized a mass revolt in July-August to end Hasina’s corrupt rule.

Misri said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first foreign leaders to welcome Professor Yunus after he took charge. He told Muhammad Yunus, ‘We wish you every success. The media narrative and the stand of the Indian government regarding India-Bangladesh relations are different.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that it is a misconception that India has relations only with a particular party in Bangladesh. He said, ‘India’s relations in Bangladesh are not with any particular party, but with everyone.’ Professor Yunus called for closer bilateral cooperation in flood and water management and urged India to join his initiative to revive SAARC. Chief Advisor Yunus said, ‘We want to create a prosperous new future for all.’

He said, ‘We can take our relations forward.’
