Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya is a name associated with courage and patriotism in the Indian Air Force. Squadron Leader Devayya became a hero during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, undertaking one of the most dangerous missions in history.
Sky Force: Why Squadron Leader Devayya’s story took 23 years to be told
During an airstrike on Pakistan’s heavily guarded Sargodha airbase, Devayya faced a deadly challenge. However, he refused to back down.
In a remarkable display of skill and bravery, he managed to outmaneuver the enemy jet and shoot it down—the only Indian Air Force pilot to achieve this during the war. However, his own aircraft was badly damaged in the fight, and he tragically went down in enemy territory, making the ultimate sacrifice for his mission.
Devayya’s heroism went unrecognized for decades, until 1988, when he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime honour. He remains the only Indian Air Force officer to receive this award posthumously.
His story is being brought to life in the upcoming film Sky Forcereleasing on January 24, 2025. Directed by Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Kapur, the film stars Akshay Kumar and introduces Veer Pahariya as the courageous Squadron Leader.
The film’s trailer has already resonated with audiences, showcasing Devayya’s bravery and his role in the 1965 war. Veer Pahariya, making his debut with Sky Forcededicated himself to understanding Squadron Leader Devayya’s life and legacy. From studying the 1965 Indo-Pak war to spending time with Devayya’s family, Veer thoroughly prepared for the role. His performance in the trailer captures the courage and spirit of Devayya. A viral photo of Veer touching the feet of Devayya’s wife reflects his respect for the legendary hero.
