South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the lifting of martial law from the country late on Tuesday night. The President gave this information while addressing the nation. In fact, after huge opposition in the Parliament, it was declared invalid. Late in the night, 190 out of 300 MPs from both the ruling and opposition parties voted unanimously to reject martial law. After which martial law had to be removed.
The last time a South Korean president declared martial law was in 1980, during a nationwide uprising led by students and labor unions.

Why did the President impose martial law?

President Yoon Suk-yeol said in his address, ‘I declare emergency martial law to protect South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-national elements.’ He called it necessary to protect the independent and constitutional system of the country. This announcement comes after the ongoing disputes between Yun’s People’s Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party over next year’s budget.

Tension increased in South Korea after the implementation of martial law. A crowd had gathered outside the Parliament. Opposition parties and ruling MPs also opposed it. Hundreds of protesters and media workers gathered outside the parliament, chanting slogans and waving the South Korean flag. South Korea’s opposition party leader described President Yun Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law as ‘unconstitutional’. He said that this step is against the Constitution of the country and weakens the democratic processes.
