Left -arm fast bowler Chetan Sakaria is from Varatej, a small town in Gujarat. Like every middle class family, his parents also believed that the government job would give stability and rest to his son. However, Sakaria had to do something else. He loved batting in cricket, but later became the left -handed fast bowler. He also played for Team India. His maternal uncle Mansukh Bhai played an important role behind making him a cricketer, who runs a stationery shop in Jamnagar. In fact, Sakaria’s parents, who were struggling with poverty, were against their dreams of playing cricket. He believed that government job is right for his future. But Sakaria’s mind was always engaged in cricket. So he continued to play.
Sakaria was very supported by his maternal uncle. Whenever he was in trouble, his maternal uncle always stood with him. Sakaria was seen playing tennis-ball cricket and playing for the school team. He then took training under the guidance of Rajendra Gohil at Sir Bhavsinghji Cricket Academy. During this time he also worked at the maternal uncle’s stationery shop. Sakaria soon made a place in the U16 team of Saurashtra. But then he suffered a dangerous injury. He did not know how much pressure on the body is on the body by bowling fast. So he ignored his glute injury. This further increased his injury. And he had to be out of the team for the next whole year.
Chetan Sakaria’s life changed from MRF Foundation
Sakaria got the real opportunity when he was selected in the U19 team of Saurashtra to play the Cooch Behar Trophy. He took 18 wickets in 6 matches. With this, Saurashtra sent him to the MRF Pace Foundation. Sakaria worked very hard. Glenn Macgra also gave him some tips. This helped Sakaria a place in the Saurashtra team for the 2018-19 season. He did not get a chance to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He played just one match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But then senior fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat was hurt. This gave Sakaria a chance to play in the Ranji Trophy.
Sakaria took full advantage of this opportunity. He took 29 wickets in 8 matches. But after this he got a stress fracture. So he stayed out of the team for some time. But he did not give up and continued to work hard. Difficulties were not new for Sakaria. He grew up in a family of five people. His family’s financial condition was not good. He did not even have cricket shoes. Just before the MRF Paes Academy went to the Academy, Saurashtra’s senior player Sheldon Jackson gave him a pair of shoes. When Sheldon Jackson gave shoes to Sakaria, he said- this was a big thing for me. I will always be grateful to him.
